And he’s just wondering if the technology business is a natural area to allocate excess capital for the best return on equity for the company. I don’t know where this got cut off, but this is from. Sounds like…īecky, we can hear you over, someone’s brought a tablet over, and we can hear you over the tablet for the time being. We have a lot of questions that have come in for Charlie Munger, and we’re going to be getting to those questions as soon as we can get the audio fixed for this. Again, this is the Annual Meeting for the Daily Journal Shareholders Meeting. I don’t know in the control room if you guys have any ideas about what’s happening. It sounds like they’re not hearing, folks. And Charlie, just let me know when you do hear this. Maybe you guys can play me - I don’t know if there’s a Voice of God you could play to the floor there, but I’ll keep talking on the hopes that Charlie can pick up on this. Oh, can you hear me, Charlie? I’ll keep talking.ġ, 2, 3, 4, 5. Is the technology business a natural area to allocate excess capital for the best return on equity for the company? Now its fastest-growing subsidiary, Journal Technologies accounts for a large part of the company’s earnings. In the past year, you’ve in the past, you’ve described Daily Journal’s unique position of being a newspaper, which generated enough excess cash in the past to invest in an equity portfolio. The second question comes in, and it’s in regards to capital allocation. So I expect a lot of clarity on our long-term approach sometime later this year. I like the business and the potential for it. And what I can say now is that the parallels between the software company I built in and Journal Technologies are remarkable. And I had incomplete information at that time, and I thought it was important that I have the optionality to hire someone better suited or promote from within if we discover that be a better path.Īnd I founded and helped grow a geography software company with no background in publishing or the legal and court sector. Lyrics will be included in the shipment for completeness, but a vocalist should listen to the original recording for the notes and appropriate phrasing. Electric bass should be played with a fuzz-distortion effect to recreate the sound of bassist Dennis Johnson. It is preferable for the keyboard to use a Hammond B3 organ effect to duplicate keyboardist Phil Porter’s sound on the record. The organ run at letter D should be brought down in volume to enable the trumpet cascades to shine. Bands should rehearse this section well to ensure timing and phrases are cohesive. In the 4th and 5th measure of letter D, note the 2nd trumpet’s “E” is part of the lead trumpet’s run and that note should be played appropriately as part of that run. Timing, intonation and balance are critical for the proper effect. Performers should take note of how the cascades at letter D are arranged. Byron was with the band at both the beginning and end but never recorded on an album. Byron was an original member of the trumpet section and close friend of Bill. According to Kevin Seeley’s history of the CHASE band, the original demo recording of “Get It On” was recorded in trumpeter Byron Lingenfelter’s living room in Las Vegas. Get It On - Bill Chase - Level 5 (4 Brass) Trumpet Combo - ( 4 Trumpets, Guitar, Organ, Bass, and Drum Set) If you plan to do some serious PC case cleaning projects with your electric computer duster, the ED500-ESD is definitely worth the extra cost over the ED500P. As previously mentioned, these are made from ESD-safe plastics that do not hold or dissipate any static electricity. Speaking of plastics, the ED500-ESD comes with a concentrator nozzle, an air-flare nozzle, an air-pin pointer, and an added dust brush nozzle. It also runs hot but this isn’t a big issue thanks to its sturdy plastic handle. You shouldn’t use this electric duster around pets or children under the age of 5. Unfortunately, that also means that the ED500-ESD is quite loud. This device basically sets the bar for what to look for out of an electric air duster. The ED500-ESD has a powerful 500-Watt motor and the same 0.75 horsepower rating for its ability to push air out. But don’t fully discount the ED500P for PC case cleaning, as many users have reported safely using the ED500P to clean out their PC cases for years without any negative consequences. This helps to prevent damage to your PC’s most sensitive components. While the ED500-ESD is nearly identical to the MetroVac ED500P, this model is better (and more expensive) because it is grounded, is made from ESD-safe plastic, and comes with an anti-static wrist strap. It pushes air through fast and if it was just a little bigger it really could serve as a mini leaf blower. This powerful electric duster is powered by a 500 Watt motor that delivers about 0.75 horsepower, which puts the air-blowing capabilities of the ED500P on par with some small electric leaf blowers. The MetroVac ED500-ESD Electric Duster should be your go-to if you have expensive PC hardware that you want to keep clean. Irresponsible behavior is not only dangerous it can inhibit breeding practices, cause shifts in territories, cause stress to the animals, and negatively impact owl behavior.Īlways keep your distance and give any animal you observe plenty of space. Image: Long-eared Owl at Owl-O-Rama How to Go Owling, Responsibly While we likely won’t see Barn Owls in Door County, it’s important to know what Barn Owls sound and look like so you can record one if you hear or see it. This is exciting news for the species, and there are likely more Barn Owl nests in southern parts of the state. In fact, a Barn Owl nest was found in La Crosse for the first time in over twenty years in 2021. Like Long-eared and Short-eared Owls, Barn Owls are not usually found in Door County and are rare in the state of Wisconsin. You may spot these species in other parts of Wisconsin, where they have been recorded in recent years! The Short-eared Owl makes ground nests in open grasslands, while Long-eared Owls use nests that other birds have made, sometimes in tree cavities or on cliffs. They are both medium-sized owls, similar in appearance, but the Long-eared Owl has longer ear tufts on the top of its head. Both Short-eared and Long-eared Owls have not been recorded as “observed” in Door County. In addition to the frequent visitors in our forests, some rare sightings of owls across the state are listed as a species of concern by the Wisconsin DNR. The country’s largest cigarette maker, ITC Ltd, uses similar tactics, such as advertising at kiosks. Philip Morris is not alone in using marketing methods that Indian officials say are illegal. Philip Morris’ goal is that every smoker in India should be able to buy a pack of Marlboro “within walking distance,” according to an internal 2015 company document. Of those, about two-thirds smoke traditional hand-rolled cigarettes. Tobacco use kills more than 900,000 people a year in India, and the World Health Organization estimates that tobacco-related diseases cost the country about $16 billion annually.Ī SHORT WALK: A man smokes near a Marlboro advertisement in New Delhi. “India remains a high potential market with huge upside with cigarette market still in infancy,” says a 2014 internal document.Īccording to government data, India has about 100 million smokers. With cigarette sales declining in many countries, Philip Morris has identified India, population 1.3 billion, as a market with opportunity for significant growth. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2002 found that during the 1990s, “tobacco industry sponsorship of bars and nightclubs increased dramatically, accompanied by cigarette brand paraphernalia, advertisements, and entertainment events in bars and clubs.” In targeting young adults, Philip Morris is deploying a promotional strategy that it and other tobacco companies used in the United States decades ago. Arora, the chief tobacco control officer in Delhi, has spent the past three years pulling down cigarette advertisements at local kiosks. The company’s goal is to make sure that “every adult Indian smoker should be able to buy Marlboro within walking distance,” according to another 2015 strategy document. In recent years, they have helped to more than quadruple Marlboro’s market share in India, where the company is battling to expand its reach in the face of an entrenched local giant. Reuters is publishing a selection of those documents in a searchable repository, The Philip Morris Files. In them, Philip Morris presents these promotions as key marketing activities. Philip Morris’ marketing strategy for India, which relies heavily on kiosk advertising and social events, is laid out in hundreds of pages of internal documents reviewed by Reuters that cover the period from 2009 to 2016. A key goal is “winning the hearts and minds of LA-24,” those between legal age, 18, and 24, according to one slide in a 2015 commercial review presentation.Īs with the point-of-sale ads at kiosks, public health officials say that giving away cigarettes is a violation of India’s Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act and its accompanying rules. In internal documents, Philip Morris International is explicit about targeting the country’s youth. These include tobacco shop displays as well as the free distribution of Marlboro – the world’s best-selling cigarette brand – at nightclubs and bars frequented by young people. In response to questions from Reuters, he said the company’s advertising is “compliant with Indian law” and that Philip Morris has “fully cooperated with the enforcement authorities” on the matter.īut Indian government officials say Philip Morris is using methods that flout the nation’s tobacco-control regulations. American consumers were sure that the name of the cigarettes was related to the state of Massachusetts, the American "cowboys ' forge" for the whole country, although this is just a random consonance of the initial letters of these names.Venkatesh says Philip Morris is doing nothing wrong. Later, in advertising cigarettes in America, a cowboy on a horse was used, and "Marlboro" cigarettes became " men's " with a traditional brown filter. The slogan "cherry tip for your ruby lips", emphasized the brand's current positioning. Immediately after entering the market, Marlboro cigarettes were advertised as women's cigarettes that had a red filter. In 1924, Philip Morris cigarettes appeared in America under the abbreviated name "Marlboro". The English Marlborough College, which opened in 1843, has nothing to do with the cigarette brand. The aristocratic theme was present in the brand names, using the surnames of famous counts and dukes. By 1885, the company was selling tobacco products under four brands: "Blues", "Cambridge", "Derby", "Marlborough". Marlboro is a brand of cigarettes of the Philip Morris company, which was originally an English firm that opened a tobacco store in London, on Bond Street, in 1847. We were looking for a modern equivalent for the Greek references and this style of music seemed to be entertaining and a real departure at the same time.” Especially when it comes to Disney music. It can be exhilarating, especially when it gets everybody on their feet. Menken once said in an interview that he, initially, wanted to go down a classic Greek approach for the soundtrack, but directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, were the ones who really pushed the gospel direction because “that’s what you sing when you’re singing about God-or in this case the gods.” Musker explained on a separate occasion: “Gospel is a storytelling kind of music. LaChanze says that big hitters like Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight were also considered, but, essentially, Wheeler needed “singers that could take direction and come together and sound like music… he wanted Broadway voices that could take direction and blend.” The five women did that seamlessly (think: The Supremes in glamorous togas) outside of their musical background, they also all had a hint of church in them, something very necessary for the largely gospel-driven soundtrack. Though likely a calculated option, can you picture the British girl group belting out "A Star Is Born," with the conviction necessary to sell that song? Yeah, neither can we. It was rumored that the Spice Girls were considered for the roles, but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. “Allan Menken said, ‘Well, we have to find something for her.’” “The director told me, ‘You sang that so well, but you will not get this role because your voice is a little too mature for this character,’” she says. Freeman, meanwhile, tells me that, prior to Hercules, she auditioned for the role of Pocahontas, which is where she met the composer, Alan Menken. LaChanze says Harold Wheeler, who composed and orchestrated the film, sought her out following her work on Once on this Island. The women were selected mostly due to their work on Broadway. They were supporting characters, mainly appearing when the film required narration and dynamic vocals, but, for many, they provided the movie's real star quality. Thomas, Cheryl Freeman, LaChanze, and Roz Ryan. And that’s mostly due to its five muses.Ĭalliope, Clio, Melpomene, Terpsichore, and Thalia (not many people know the Disney muses have actual names, but they do) were voiced by singers Lillias White, Vanéese Y. But what about Hercules? Why doesn't anyone think of the criminally underrated 1997 Disney movie? The Hercules track, “Go The Distance,” was nominated for an Oscar, but ended up losing to Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On.” But that's not Hercules' fault, nothing was going to stop Titanic that year! That doesn't contradict the fact that, 20 years later, the Hercules soundtrack remains a standout. These are all understandable choice-all those movies have won Oscars for Best Original Song after all. In the movie, they are presented as the five lovely Goddesses, whose domain lies in the arts, and they sing the tales of ancient Greece in a "gospel choir" style. When you think of outstanding Disney soundtracks, what comes to mind first? The Lion King, definitely. However, this is never referenced in either the movie or series. Likewise, when they were encouraged it was due to the blessings of a Muse. In Greek legend, the greatest power of the Muses was a kind of possession - when a poet or actor performed at their best, it was not them, but a muse speaking through them. The five often do this to begin or join in a song. Object Manifestation - They can inhabit statues and images that depict them (bring said statues and/or image to life).Immortality - they can live forever and cannot be killed. The Muses got to sing the song "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)".Īs goddesses of Arts and Proclaimer of Heroes and Zeus, their father and his wife Hera were the judges of the Music Contest, he invited the Olympian Gods and The Sirens, they were jealous of the muses song because it was good and beautiful and The sirens sang the siren song but Hera the judge made the muses winners of the competition. The Five Muses are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne - the Titaness of Memory under the Alias name memory which will make Them Half Sisters of Hercules and There, in fact, the nine major Greek Muses. Roz Ryan as Thalia, the short and plump Muse of comedy.LaChanze as Terpsichore, the dance Muse with the short, kinky hair.Cheryl Freeman as Melpomene, the long-haired Muse of tragedy.Thomas as Clio, the Muse of history, with the ponytail Lillias White as Calliope, the Muse of epic tales, who wears a headband over her big, curly hair. |
